This month our vendor shout out goes to Jennifer Trotter, Owner of Lip Service Makeup! We have had several of our #BRIKbrides use Lip Service for their big day and each and every time Jen and her team create a flawless beautiful look for the Bride and her Bridal Squad!
Finding the Makeup Artist for your Wedding Day is one of the most important decisions you will make! Jen took the time to tell us all about how she got started, tips for finding the right makeup artist for you, and even spilled a few beauty secrets!
Tell us a little about how you got started in this industry
After a short stint as on air talent and working on sets while perfecting my own on-camera makeup, I was approached to handle makeup for a commercial shoot. I then began doing commercial work regularly, and then started doing weddings a few years later…. and got hooked! Here I am, 27 years later with countless commercials and well over 1200 weddings under my belt!
What is your favorite part about doing Wedding Hair and Makeup?
I love working with brides! There are so many things about it that are a great fit for me….I have a calm personality and love to be busy, and I love working as a team with my fellow vendors to make each bride’s day perfect. It’s also incredibly gratifying to working alongside my team to help women look and feel like a million bucks, all while we have fun on wedding day!
What is your favorite part about working a wedding at BRIK?
Um, hello….getting to see you guys!! ; ) Brik is a gorgeous venue with a fab owner and staff, and the set up and light in the bridal suite are both incredible. A great bridal suite set up makes it so much easier to work! Most of my Brik brides have their ceremony AND reception at the venue, so the bridal parties aren’t stressed trying to get out the door…photographers can start pre-wedding photos right there in there in the bridal suite.
Do you have a favorite memory of a BRIK couple’s wedding?
So many, it’s hard to choose! One of my favorite weddings that springs to mind was Jordan’s New Year’s Eve wedding….such an incredibly fun group of girls, and Jordan has since become a friend. She’s the sweetest person and seriously funny….we laughed SO hard! It was a truly joyful day that went by super fast. There’s an awesome pic of Jordan and her girls hanging in the bridal suite as we speak…just check out that image (below) get a feel for the personalities of this sassy bunch.
What is one thing you want couples to know about Makeup Artists?
Even if you wear makeup daily, it’s crucial to hire a pro on the big day. Very few people know how to truly enhance their features, create a look that is equally beautiful in photos and in person, all while making sure the makeup and hair lasts all day and night. If there was ever a time to hire a reputable pro, it’s your wedding day! Skip newbies who are still practicing for cheap and friends or friends who “sort of” do makeup and hair….the money you might save won’t mean anything if they don’t show, do a terrible job and ruin your day and your photos. It sounds extreme, but sadly, it happens every weekend. As with your other wedding categories, always use reputable and experienced professional vendors. Beauty Pros with experience will take care of you and your girls, ensure everyone looks incredible and create a get ready environment that’s fun and stress free!
What advice do you have for couples when it comes to choosing the right Makeup Artist for their wedding?
Do your research, get recommendations from your venue, your planner, photographer, etc. Check out the artist’s website and social media….creep to your heart’s content! Look for makeup and hair that speaks to your style, shows plenty of variety and isn’t photoshopped. Legit artists should have a lot of examples from real weddings, and connections and tags from other reputable vendors. Red flags include feeds with nothing but selfies, too many personal pics, no bridal work, and posts that make it clear the artist isn’t a professional. Your wedding isn’t the time to let someone with just an interest in makeup practice on you! Choose a beauty team who can show you plenty of proof that they’re great at what they do, and that they manage the pace, pressure and stress of doing weddings regularly.
Can you share some of your beauty tips with our #brikbrides?
Heck yes! Drink tons of water, don’t smoke, avoid sun exposure and moisturize nightly….everyone tries to make skin care more complicated, but covering those basics are truly the fastest (and cheapest!) way to ensure clear, hydrated skin on wedding day. NEVER start something brand new right before your wedding….no facials, microderms, Botox or even a spray tan. Unless these things are part of your regular beauty routine and you know for sure the results you can expect, it’s just not worth the risk of something going wrong. Lashes elevate any bridal look…don’t skip them! You can do individuals, strips, or extensions….all deliver that extra pop. Skip trendy looks for your wedding….you’ll regret it later and it’ll make your photos look dated. Beautifully enhanced looks have a fresher vibe and they never go out of style!
What would you say sets you apart from other Hair and Makeup Artists?
I think it’s incredibly rare to find an artist with as much experience as I do who also has the same level of enthusiasm and passion that I have for bridal artistry…..I truly love what I do, and it shows in my work! The looks I create are all about enhancing each woman’s features….they’re highly customized and blended so that even dramatic looks have a softness to them. I’m the owner and principal artist, but I also have assembled an incredible team of artists and stylists….we can handle groups of any size.
How do you create a cohesive look for a wedding party?
Once I know the color of the gowns, vibe of the wedding and the bride’s preferences, I create a color palette for that group. Example – a wash of bronze shadow, smoky liner and a medium berry lip to pair with sleek navy bridesmaid gowns. As each person sits in my chair, I make adjustments….if they’re a natural girl, they get a lighter version of that palette. If they’re a makeup girl, they’ll get more liner, a deeper lip, more coverage in their foundation. For hair, we also consider the style of the gown, overall vibe of the wedding, and bride’s preferences. If some girls are getting half-up and some are getting updos, we keep the look consistent with maintaining a sleek look or looser, organic texture with all of the styles. Looks can be varied, but still cohesive if you pay attention to details!
Describe your signature Lip Service Bride.
Although we work with a wide variety of brides, the thing our brides all have in common is that they want a flawless, naturally enhanced look and has most likely heard about us a few different sources. Our bride has done her research and values not only the quality of our hair and makeup, but the teamwork and experience we provide. It’s super common for us to work with sisters, cousins, friends and other brides who are connected to previous Lip Service brides….love that! She’ll want lush lashes and neutrals on eyes paired with flushed cheeks….lips requested most often are peachy nudes or a bright pop of fuchsia or red. On wedding day, she wants to be relaxed and have fun….and my team and I make sure to create a great customer service experience for them.
Thank you, Jen for taking the time to answer our questions and teaching us a little more about Lip Service Makeup! We can’t wait to work with you again soon!
